North Carolina was one of the thirteen original Colonies. It was first settled by small farmers and grew quickly in the mid 18th century.

Jacob Staley (1763) married Margaret Coble. The Staley and Coble families lived near each other in North Carolina. Both families were Lutheran and were part of the migration in the early 1800's from North Carolina to Ohio. The family left North Carolina with five children, one horse, a spring wagon and all of their belongings. The parents walked all the way to Ohio.

They first settled in Montgomery County, Ohio. According to The History of Montgomery County, Ohio, Jacob owned land as early as 1811. Jacob is in the tax list of Montgomery County in 1814. They were in the 1820 and 1830 census in Butler Township, Montgomery County, Ohio. Peter Bolin (Jr. and Sr.) and Matthew Bolin were close neighbors of the Staleys in 1830. They were in Shelby County, Dinsmore Township, Ohio by 1840.

In 1833 Alfred Staley (1809) arrived in Dinsmore Township, Shelby County, Ohio from Montgomery County, Ohio. He was born in North Carolina. He bought one blind bridle, two sets of horse gears at David Taylor's estate sale. He was in Shelby County at the time of the 1840 census and again in 1850 with his wife Catherine and children Valentine Staley (married Sarah Baker), Mary, David, Jacob, John, Martha and Jas.. In 1840 in Shelby County the William Staley household was next to John Staley and Alfred Staley. Nicholas Staley was on the same census page. He bought a set of horse gears at David Taylor's estate sale in 1835.

In 1835 Reuben Staley (1802) was security for the guardianship of the Taylor children. Reuben was born about 1802 in North Carolina. He bought land in Shelby County in 1831 and 1835. In 1832 he married Nancy Ann Richardson in Shelby County, Ohio. In 1850 they were in Franklin Township, Shelby County, Ohio. Their children were William, July Ann, Reuben, Nancy A. and Margaret A.

John Staley (1799) was in the 1830 census in Montgomery County, Ohio. In 1835 he became the guardian of some of the Taylor children and bought the hogs in the woods, a flat iron and a flakestand at the estate sale.

In 1840 they were in Shelby County. In 1850 John and his wife Elizabeth were in Salem Township, Shelby County, Ohio. Their children were Alford, David, Margaret, Jacob, Amelia, Mary Ann, Armstrong, George and Florinda.

Levi Staley (1799) was born in 1799 in North Carolina. In 1830 he was in Butler, Montgomery County, Ohio. In 1835 he bought a bay mare, a keg, a spade and scythe and snead at David Taylor's estate sale. In 1840 he lived in Franklin Township.

John Taylor married Margaret Jane Staley on December 10, 1835. Margaret was born on May 3, 1810 in Montgomery County, Ohio. She was the daughter of Jacob and Margaret Covill.

Priscilla Staley (1803) married Peter Bolin about 1824.

Shelby County, Ohio is in western Ohio and was formed in 1819 from Miami County.
A surety bond is a promise to assume responsibility for the obligation of a borrower. The person who provides this promise, is known as a surety or security. Bondsmen were usually relatives or family friends.

A scythe or a sickle is a hand tool for reaping crops. The handle of a scythe is a snead.
